KUALA LUMPUR: Northbound highway traffic has been reported to be slow-moving from Tapah to Gopeng as many people are still going back to their hometowns to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri on Monday (May 2).

A spokesman for the Malaysian Highway Authority said traffic was slow on an 8.3km stretch of that route but was smooth in both directions on the Kuala Lumpur-Karak and East Coast Highways.

Checks at the Sungai Besi and Gombak toll plazas this morning found traffic flow smooth, although there was an increase in the number of vehicles. Keeper of the Rulers' Seal Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad announced on Sunday that Muslims in Malaysia would celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri on Monday. Many had expected Hari Raya to fall on Tuesday but started leaving for their hometowns on Friday because Labour Day, which fell on Sunday, has allowed Malaysians to enjoy a long stretch of holidays.

The public can get the latest traffic information from the toll-free Plusline at 1800-88-0000 and Twitter account or the Malaysian Highway Authority toll-free line at 1-800-88-7752 and Twitter account. – Bernama
