GEORGE TOWN: A six-year-old girl died of smoke inhalation during a fire at an apartment in Jalan Oo Lien Teh here.

The incident at a high rise apartment complex at about 9am on Saturday happened when the parents of the deceased went to buy goods with their one-year-old son.

The girl, pulled out of the fire by other residents, was rushed to Penang Hospital but died about an hour later."The cause of death is smoke inhalation," he said. He said five fire engines from Jalan Perak and Lebuh Pantai rushed to the scene and managed to bring the fire under control within an hour.

"Initial investigations revealed that the parents left the house with the one-year-old baby boy to buy essential goods leaving behind the victim and another four-year-old," ACP Soffian said.The fire destroyed about 80% of the unit on the 19th floor, however, no other units were affected in the incident.
