Menteri Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia, Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah berkata, pemilihan bandar berpopulasi kira-kira 200,000 penduduk itu dibuat pada mesyuarat Jawatankuasa Induk sambutan Hari Malaysia 2020 antara kerajaan negeri dan Persekutuan pagi tadi.
Terdahulu beliau mengadakan kunjungan hormat ke atas Menteri Utiliti Sarawak, Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, yang juga bertindak selaku menteri negeri bertanggungjawab bagi sambutan Hari Malaysia 2020. Dr Rundi berkata, kerajaan negeri sebenarnya yang memohon untuk mengadakan sambutan itu di sini bagi tahun ini selepas menjadi tuan rumah pada 2019.
Sambutan Hari Malaysia pada tahun lepas telah diadakan di Stadium Perpaduan Kuching yang dihadiri oleh Perdana Menteri sebelum ini, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Ketua Menteri Sabah Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal dan Abang Johari.
