KOTA KINABALU: The colourful pageantry of Sabah’s Kadazandusun and Murut ethnic cultures will take on a subdued tone when the community marks the two-day Pesta Kaamatan celebrations that starts today.

For the first time in decades, the Hongkod Koissan grounds will not hear the beating of gongs or witness a variety of cultural performances and games.

All key events that are a hallmark of the celebrations including the popular pageant to pick Sabah’s Unduk Ngadau have been cancelled. This time, Kaamatan will be a family affair as the nation observes the conditional movement control order put in place to check the spread of Covid-19. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal in his Kaamatan message to the community said that this year’s festival was challenging in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Noting the Kadazandusun legend of the sacrifice of princess Huminidon, who gave up her life for the people to overcome a famine, Shafie said that there is a need for “small” sacrifices by the community in efforts to break the Covid-19 infection chain. He urged the community not to allow for any large scale celebrations and observe the standard operating procedures in place for family gatherings under the conditional MCO.
