GEORGE TOWN: Seven men were detained by the police on suspicion of breaking into several childcare centres in two districts on Penang island.

Northeast OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong on Wednesday said the suspects were detained in two different locations in Sungai Nibong following raids on June 9. He said the operation was conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department unit from northeast district police headquarters between 5pm and 6.30pm.

"All of the suspects were believed to be involved in breaking into three Taska in the northeast district, and four in the southwest district since March this year.One of the suspects tried to evade the police during the operation and attempted to climb down from level five to level four through a window in one of the empty units of an apartment in Sungai Nibong at about 6.30pm, he said.
