The sand-mining concessionaire said the spill has been contained, is currently investigating its cause.

Selangor's sand mining concessionaire Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd has confirmed that diesel spillage was behind the contamination of raw water in Sungai Selangor yesterday.

This resulted in the shutdown of Sungai Selangor Water Treatment Plant Phases 1, 2 and 3 and the Rantau Panjang Water Treatment Plant between 6pm to 8.15pm yesterday evening."Semesta Group Sdn Bhd would like to confirm that it detected diesel spills in the Sungai Selangor area near the Hang Tuah Lake on July 21 at around 6.15pm."

"Our Emergency Response Team was deployed immediately to the site of the incident and the cause of the spill was identified and controlled," said Semesta's senior manager for Public Relations and Corporate Affairs, Abdul Wahab Nordin, in a statement today. Semesta said it was currently monitoring the situation and working together with the relevant authorities.

"We are currently investigating the cause of the incident from all angles, including the possibility of sabotage, and will provide additional information in due time," it added.
