Selangor Sultan appointed religious council chairman

THE election of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, as the chairman of the National Council of Islamic Religious Affairs at the 258th meeting of the Conference of Rulers is in line with the recommendation of the federal Islamic Affairs Supreme Committee. In a statement today, Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal Syed Danial Syed Ahmad said the committee, then chaired by the late Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid, believed that since Islam is under the jurisdiction and discretion of the Malay Rulers it was more appropriate for the council to be chaired by a state ruler.
