Daripada keseluruhan pertubuhan yang terlibat dengan perdagangan borong dan runcit pada 2018, sebanyak 461,975 pertubuhan atau 98.5% merupakan PKS dengan kadar pertumbuhan tahunan sebanyak 4.7%.
Terdapat 469,024 pertubuhan beroperasi dalam sektor ini pada 2018 berbanding 370,725 pertubuhan pada tahun 2013 dengan kadar pertumbuhan tahunan 4.8%. Ketua perangkawan Mohd Uzir Mahidin berkata, gaji dan upah yang dibayar berjumlah RM62.9 bilion berbanding RM39.0 bilion pada tahun 2013.
