The former teacher and principal says the government should make national schools so appealing that parents will lose interest in vernacular schools. school principal

V Chakaravathy was thrust into the limelight when he spoke out against the education system at a forum attended by minister Maszlee Malik.

However, by the mid-1980s, national schools had started moving towards becoming more like religious schools so much so that religions teachers were given more prominence than other teachers, said Chakaravathy, who received the Exemplary Teacher Award in 1999.Chakaravathy, 80, said that in his time he had taught students of all races, the majority of whom were Malays who are now successful in their careers.

“The other teachers and I were colour blind. I treated the children the same. They were my children and I wanted them to do well,” he said. By this time, he said, more Bumiputeras depended on national policies to succeed rather than ensuring only good teachers were hired. “They have spoiled one generation,” Chakaravathy said.

However national schools had become too religious and many parents had felt “too uncomfortable”, since the mid-1990s.

Agree. At last someone acknowledged that the existence of SJKs are the root cause of our racial problems. Children are separated from young. It is not conducive to nation building. Need a strong political will to close all these schools, then only can we talk about real unity.

peoplespowerr You can plan all you want but unity starts with uniform. We have two types of uniform. We have classes which segregate students. Students should be taught all are equal but just visit the national school and see how division and segregation created.

Just can dream

Varnish all the vernacular schools

Tutup sahaja sekolah cina dan tamil buat macam di China dimana puak Han perlu diikuti semua puak!!

Totally agree

Just make national schools as only option. Period.

Very good and crystal clear point from this former teacher. maszlee chedetofficial

School is the best place for uniting our children. You can be any race or religion but when come to the school we all Malaysian. I am really want to see the New Malaysia concept is to start soon for unity and understand each other Malaysian cultures.

Keep them seperated & segregated. Easier to control that way. Keep making them think that they are better off in their bubble. Remember your race is much superior and better than any other races. Keep on hating! ✊ wehateeachother

Haha yup. In the English stream schools many parents send their children to these schools. Malays. Indians. Chinese. It is also the most muhibbah schools. National schools today are just anothe Islamic religious schools. Oops! Maybe la

Well said

Pls stay with SJKC n SJKT as the Malay are happy with Sek Keb. My children are not racist at all compared to me, not stressed up, well mannered turn out fine SPM 9A, 10A but wait when they enter working life and hv to face Mandarin speaking ads and discrimination at work place.

Andddd who opposes closing of sjkc n sjkt in favor of certain races?

Great teacher . Thank you sir.👍🏻

Hard to fight extremism at school, says ex-headmasterHe says the entire public school system would have to be reformed, which will not be easy. Politicians employing the rhetoric of racial or religious supremacy were bigger part of the problem. How many people think our current Minister of Edu is able tof making positive changes? We knew all along there was no credible & capable person to helm the portfolio. When TDM wanted to helm MoE, many people & NGOs were against the idea. Now we ended up with a wrong MM. That which was sown in the early 80s has yielded a bountiful harvest. Now, let them have brioche!
