KULAI: Students and teachers from Foon Yew High School here have banded together to create more than 13,000 pieces of Spring Festival couplets for the Chinese New Year celebration.

Vice-principal Gan Chuang Chee said the activity has been part of the school’s annual tradition during the festive season since 2014.

“This year we wanted to make it a bit special by getting recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records. “A total of three campuses were involved in this year’s project – the Johor Baru campus, the Seri Alam campus and the Kulai campus,” he said in an interview. He added that the programme was also joined by six calligraphy masters from the Malaysia Contemporary Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Association.

“We divided the session into two phases. The first phase was on Saturday, when the Johor Baru and Seri Alam campuses started creating their couplets.Gan added that the teams carried out the second phase yesterday, involving the Kulai campus, where they managed to produce 5,300 couplets. “Each student was given three to four sheets of paper measuring 0.9m to 1.2m in length to write his calligraphy on. These couplets would usually be found in front of the door of a house during the Chinese New Year,” he said, adding that the calligraphy masters were given 5.5m of paper.
