“Information reveals that groups carrying out Kidnapping for Ransom (KFR) activities and the Abu Sayyaf Group are still trying to invade this area to carry out kidnappings and other cross-border crimes,” - Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Idris Abdullah.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Idris Abdullah said the curfew covers waters near Tawau, Semporna, Kunak, Lahad Datu, Kinabatangan, Sandakan and Beluran. He said people living in the area are prohibited from approaching or being in the declared area between 6pm and 6am.“This order will be continued to ensure that the waters in question are not invaded by terrorists who threaten the safety of international researchers conducting research and foreign tourists visiting the resort island.

Idris said the curfew was also to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those who use the waters and the land area in the Esszone. He said it would also facilitate enforcement and monitoring of boat movements and create a sense of security and confidence in chalet operators and fishermen with the presence of security forces.
