DUBAI: Saudi Arabia on Sunday imposed a temporary lockdown on its eastern Qatif province, home to a large Shi'ite Muslim population, to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the kingdom after recording four more cases that raised the total to 11.

Players entering the pitch as the stands are seen empty after the decision of the Saudi Ministry of Sports, following an outbreak Covid-19 during the Saudi Professional League soccer match between AL-Hilal and Al-Ettifaq at King Saud University Stadium, in Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia's interior ministry said all the individuals diagnosed with the disease are from Qatif. Saudi authorities have previously said those infected have either been to Iran or interacted with people who visited the Islamic Republic, home to major Shi'ite holy sites. The Saudi interior ministry said it had temporarily halted movement into and out of the oil-producing Qatif region while ensuring returning residents could reach their homes and that commercial supplies to the province continue.

Cement blocks were placed on the main road to Qatif, a resident said, declining to be named due to sensitivities.
