COLOMBO: Kerajaan Sri Lanka menggesa warganya yang menetap di luar negara supaya ‘menghantar duit’ kepada kerajaan selepas Colombo mengumumkan negara ini tidak lagi mampu membayar hutang berjumlah AS$51 bilion .
“Penyaluran mata wang asing ke negara ini hanya digunakan untuk perkara penting termasuk mendapatkan bekalan makanan, bahan api dan ubat-ubatan,” katanya. Seorang lagi rakyat Sri Lanka yang bekerja sebagai jurutera di Kanada dan enggan mendedahkan identitinya memaklumkan, dia tidak mempunyai keyakinan bahawa duit yang disumbangkan akan dibelanjakan untuk keperluan rakyat.“Sumbangan bernilai jutaan dolar itu tidak sampai kepada mangsa tsunami, tetapi masuk poket ahli-ahli politik,” ujarnya.
Sekurang-kurangnya lapan orang maut ketika beratur mendapatka bahan api di seluruh negara pada bulan lalu.
