JULY 16 — The Joint Action Group for Gender Equality applauds the actions of the Universiti Malaya student who lodged a police report against the university’s Integrity Unit for the alleged mishandling of her sexual harassment complaint against a senior lecturer.

The Code of Practice clearly states that the organization, business or institution has an obligation to notify both the complainant and the defendant in writing, about the results of the investigation once it is completed. UM appears to have failed to take the necessary steps in handling the sexual harassment complaint in an ethical, fair and transparent manner.

The student’s courage and persistence in following up with the status of her complaint to the university and in holding the university accountable by lodging a police report against the Integrity Unit are both praiseworthy and upsetting; praiseworthy because she is standing up for her rights but also in ensuring that the university is a safe space for all students, and upsetting because of the hurdles she has had to navigate to defend her rights and safety.

Sexual harassment affects millions of Malaysians, including students. A 2019 survey of Malaysians by YouGov estimated that 28 per cent of Malaysians have experienced sexual harassment; a fifth of which occurred in schools or universities.
