There is little business between Sabah and Sarawak compared to those linking Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Tambunan, Keningau, Kudat, Lahad Datu and Tawau just to name a few. A common feature of all these roads is their poor condition. More holes than Swiss cheese and holes big enough to swallow kancils. Poor conditioned roads are not only a safety hazard for road users, they also cause stress among drivers and are an economic cost to all.
In other words, going from a 1 ton axle to a 5 ton axle will do 625 times more damage to the road surface. The lorries you see plying the roads fully loaded with oil palm fruits, timber and what have you, all easily exceed the gross weight of 40 tons. This is particularly important for roads linking Beaufort/Kota Kinabalu, Telupid/Sandakan Junction, Sandakan Junction/Lahad Datu and Lahad Datu/Tawau.Besides the poor road quality, there is also the absurdly long time it takes for construction of these roads. The Penampang/Papar and Semporna/Tawau both took over 10 years to construct. Reasons for the slow construction are often blamed on delay in funds and partial payments released by the Federal Treasury and the way funds are apportioned.
Walaupun Lebuhraya Pan Borneo yang menghubungkan Sabah dan Sarawak adalah penting, kita tidak harus melupakan keperluan infrastruktur di Sabah sendiri.
