DEOpinion 'For more than 30 years, Sabah has been in an economic doldrum most of the time. Now Sabah is experiencing an economic resurgence, with promises of more momentum to come.' - Datuk John Lo

His economic restructuring has begun to produce results, notably, in the most critical areas of Sabah/Federal relationship, strengthening state financial position, unprecedented inflow of investments and establishing new industries [glass for solar, coper foil for EV batteries for EVs, coconut industry, upstream and down streams in oil and gas, steel and others], and promoting mice tourism to attract higher end tourists.

[a] Holding up implementation of some crucial cabinet and government policies/decisions, some of which are as long as more than 1 year. [c] Blocking benefits of some of these policies/decisions from reaching targeted groups. Singapore and China, undoubtedly the most successful in nation building in recent human history, have also taken time to resolve their basic infrastructure requirements.

Without grooming these young talented Sabahans, the Sabah’s economy will continue to be dominated by non-Sabahans. And Hajiji’s hard work would be wasted. [e] Worst consequence is that young Sabahans studying or working overseas now, seeing that there is no future in Sabah for them, will stay away from Sabah. Can’t blame them.So long as Sabah continues to produce commodities, don’t or fail to process or, incapable of enhancing their value chains, Sabah and Sabahans will continue to be poor.

Likewise, Sabahan professionals who are our cream of society, should enhance their capacity and capability to take on leadership roles in projects resulting from the inflow of the many substantive investments being brought in by Hajiji. Above all, they must become the beacons for the rest of Sabah on how and why things should and must be done in the right way. This is an absolute must. For years, Sabah is a like a billionaire but his children are poverty stricken like church mice.
