KOTA KINABALU: The three Indonesian crewmembers of a Sabah-registered fishing boat reportedly “held by gunmen” in southern Philippines waters have returned safely to Sandakan.

Eastern Sabah Security Command Commander Deputy Comm Hamzah Ahmad confirmed that the crewmen had returned safely. It is understood that the three, aged between 35 and 52, were not hurt.

It was learned from Filipino intelligence sources that the owner of the fishing boat had managed to secure the return of the vessel from the authorities in the southern Philippines. The crew, believed to be fishing in the waters off Pulau Jambongan in the Beluran district on Sabah’s east coast, was alleged to have encroached into southern Philippines waters late Sunday.

Family members in Tawau had also been contacted by someone informing them that the crew was being held by “gunmen” and wanted RM70,000 for the release of the men and the boat.
