Sabah CM promises no coal mining in Maliau Basin

Sabah Chief Minister Mohd Shafie Apdal says the Maliau Basin will not be opened for coal mining and will remain under the state's protection. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, August 6, 2019.

SABAH has given its assurance to not conduct open coal mining in Maliau Basin, Chief Minister Mohd Shafie Apdal told the state legislative assembly today. The basin, a world-renowned conservation and biodiversity research site, will remain protected and the Sabah government will instead buy coal from Kalimantan, Indonesia if the need arises.
