NEW YORK, Aug 30 — Former US Open winner Stan Wawrinka hinted that he was getting closer to hanging up his racket after being forced to retire mid-match during his opening round contest at the hardcourt major yesterday against French lucky loser Corentin Moutet.
It was the sixth straight defeat for the three-time major champion, who lifted his last Grand Slam trophy at Flushing Meadows in 2016.“I was injured for more than a year. It took me a while to feel much better physically and tennis-wise. I still love the game and want to compete a bit longer before stopping.”
“But I see that I’m playing and feeling better. Even if I’m not winning yet, I know I will be back winning matches soon. That’s for sure. Dominic Thiem, the 2020 US Open champion, is another player who has been forced to spend a long time on the sidelines and the Austrian also suffered an early exit yesterday against Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta.
