SIBU: A retiree lost RM44,025 to a Macau scam after he was told over the phone that his identity card had been used for illegal activities.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said on Tuesday , the 64-year-old complainant received a call from a man who identified himself as"Inspector Yong" from the Kota Kinabalu police station.

"The suspect told him that his identity card had been used by someone to send drugs from Kota Kinabalu to Pahang as well as for money laundering," he said. "The line was then 'transferred' to another 'police officer' who told the retiree that the Kota Kinabalu police had arrested a drug addict for using his identity card for the illegal activities.

"The suspect told the complainant that to extricate himself from the mess, he had to pay a certain amount of money," said ACP Stanley. Following this, from April 7 to 8, the complainant made a total of 18 transfers amounting to RM44,025 into an account provided by the suspect. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
