About 50% of the callers to Befrienders Penang last year were working adults aged between 31 to 60.

So far this year, this age group is still the largest segment but there has also been a marked increase in callers aged 60 and above.Callers aged between 31 and 40 made up the largest group at 20%. Those aged 41 to 50 formed 17% of the callers and 10% of the 6,202 were aged 51 to 60.

Those aged 31 to 60 made up 41% of those callers, and those above 60 made up 25% so far, up by 6% from last year’s figures. “If they are unable to find an outlet or see hope, they can go into a depressive state and eventually have suicidal thoughts.”
