Cases of symptomless Covid-19 may be more common than thought, according to new research.
After Australian researchers spent time on an expedition cruise ship that had set sail in mid-March, after the World Health Organisation had declared Covid-19 a global pandemic, they decided to detail the results of the Covid-19 testing that was carried out on board on 217 passengers and crew members.
This led to further immediate control measures, such as confining passengers to their cabins and requiring crew members in contact with any sick passengers to wear PPE .The results of the testing, which were published online today in the journal Thorax, showed that 59% of those on board tested positive for coronavirus.
Professor Alan Smyth, joint editor-in-chief of Thorax, commented in a linked blog that the findings also have implications for the easing of lockdown restrictions, which is currently taking place all around the world as many countries start the process of de-confinement.
