Last year, after Uma Balachand had lost Mowgli, her pet dog of 14 years, she had no intention of adopting another pet. In her heart of hearts, Mowgli was irreplaceable. But that changed one fateful afternoon.

“She had these cute eye-lined eyes and rather huge paws. When my husband held the pup, she rested her cheek on his shoulders and closed her eyes. At that point, it was a done deal as both my daughter and husband decided there was no looking back; Little Raksha slept through the entire journey home,” said Uma.“She rushed into the house, happily sniffing and exploring every corner. She suddenly spotted the rug and decided that was her pee pad! I guess I was prepared for such disasters.

“She chews and nibbles at our slippers, rugs, cars’ mudguards and even the leaves that fall from our potted plants!” Uma explained, while noting that Raksha’s dog collar license lasted for a grand total of 30 minutes when she first arrived at Uma’s home. “I remember joking with the technician: You’ve got to think ahead of this dog ! I’m not going to keep paying you every time and still be inconvenienced by a faulty gate!”

“But with me – well I am her discipline master. One stern tone or look from me and she retreats to her favorite spot, which is under my husband’s car,” laughed Uma.
