There is a poster being circulated on social media – which bears the Immigration Department logo – saying that walk-in applications for passport renewals are no longer allowed beginning May 11. Is this true?

In a statement on May 9, the Immigration Department said that"all passport renewal matters throughout the country must be made through the online system".

However, there are exceptions for applicants who are senior citizens, people with disabilities, children aged 13 years and under, Haj pilgrims and students. These groups can go straight to the counters at Immigration centres. Walk-ins are also accepted for new passport applications and replacement of damaged or lost passports. The department also announced several measures to address the congestion issue at its offices due to the increase in the number of passport renewals.Immigration saw a 40% increase in the production of Malaysian international passports following the country's decision to reopen its borders.

For those who have applied to renew passports online, they will receive an approval notification via email within three working days.If an applicant did not receive any email notification within three working days, they can still go to the passport collection centre, the department said.
