As silicon manufacturers refresh their chip lines almost every year, they often move on from support for older models. This makes it difficult for smartphone manufacturers alone to maintain software updates for older devices, resulting in many phones receiving only one or no Android upgrades., Chris Patrick, SVP and General Manager of Handsets at Qualcomm, discussed the company’s efforts to simplify updates for manufacturers.
While not claiming sole responsibility for update delays, Patrick revealed they are working with Google and manufacturers to solve this issue. “One of the things we’ve been working on for the past several years with Google and with the OEMs is to change the structure of inline code — to kind of change the machinery for how we do those updates.”
