QUICK witted, sharp and humorous are some terms I never would have associated with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob before a brief encounter with the man at his alma mater - Universiti Malaya - recently.
I had a chance to meet Ismail Sabri and shared an impromptu conversation in person, which I must admit, eliminated some prejudices and doubts about him that have hung with me ever since he stepped into the prominent role of Defence Minister in 2020 and subsequently Prime Minister. Going back to the brief conversation, besides a jog down memory lane to the time he spent as a law student in UM, we spoke about what nudged him to review existing laws, including 147 obsolete ones.He added that stemming from a background of a lawyer, he could not stand to have outdated laws obstructing authorities from taking necessary action towards wrong-doers to keep the Malaysian Family secure and safeguard their wellbeing.
Now we know the move to review and amend outdated laws stemmed from a sincere heart and is not purely political. But, it is welcomed all the same, as is the RM1mil allocation for the setting up of the Tan Sri Ahmad Ibrahim Foundation to provide legal services to low income Malaysians.
