PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has urged Malaysians to practise the principles of the Rukunegara to maintain peace and unity in the nation.

Speaking during the launch of the 50th-anniversary celebration of the Rukunegara on Thursday in Putrajaya, Muhyiddin said its five principles should be ingrained into every Malaysian.

"Although investigations were done and strict action was taken against those who broke the law, such acts leave deep scars on the unity and harmony of the society."Belief in God is the most important principle in a nation of different races and religions. He also said while the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is the head of the country and a symbol of unity for all Malaysians, the Malay Rulers are the icons of unity in the states.

He also said that the fifth Rukunegara principle– Good Behaviour and Morality – defines a country of people rich with manners, who do not use vulgar words or act inconsiderately. "If we do this together, we will be able to uphold Rukunegara for the sake of the unity of the people, especially when we are faced with a crisis," said Muhyiddin.
