Christina Liew says she will also call for an emergency meeting on the matter. FMTNews DCM

KOTA KINABALU: Deputy Chief Minister Christina Liew says Sabah’s 10-year action plan to save its elephants from extinction is awaiting approval from the state Cabinet, although she will push for its implementation even without the green light.

Liew, who is also in charge of the tourism, culture and environment portfolio, said she would call for an emergency meeting with the wildlife department to deal with the increase in number of elephant deaths in the state. “We need to know what the problems faced by our rangers are and hear their suggestions on how to curb further elephant deaths in Sabah,” she told reporters at the state legislative assembly here today.Liew also said she wants to know whether there has been any cover-up on the part of wildlife authorities in these deaths.

She added that she does not fear plantation owners in the state if it turns out that they are involved in the killing of wild animals.Subscribe to our newsletter and get news delivered to your mailbox.
