KUALA LUMPUR: PKR is waiting for its president Anwar Ibrahim to return from his pilgrimage in Mecca before the party makes a stand on controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik.
“We will wait for him to come back and chair the meeting. Only then will we make our official stand,” said PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution. This comes a day after PPBM Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, who is also the youth and sports minister, broke ranks with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad on the calls to deport Naik.
Calls for Naik to be sent back to India grew following a recent series of lectures he gave in Kelantan, one of which touched on the loyalty of Malaysian Hindus to Mahathir. He claimed that Malaysian Hindus are more loyal to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi than to Mahathir despite receiving “100 times” more rights than Muslims in India.Subscribe to our newsletter and get news delivered to your mailbox.
