The DAP lawmaker says the Kedah MB’s remarks are a harmful perpetuation of gender stereotypes.

PH’s Syerleena Abdul Rashid said that by implying that rugby is a ‘man’s game’ and netball is somehow lesser, Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor undermines the years of effort athletes put into their sports.

A video on Sanusi’s Facebook account showed the PAS leader officiating a rugby match in Kedah, during which he said: “No rugby players should be afraid. If they are afraid, they cannot play rugby.Syerleena said Sanusi’s remarks were a harmful perpetuation of gender stereotypes and should not be uttered by a political leader.

“It’s not just disappointing, it’s downright infuriating to hear Sanusi belittle netball players with such remarks. She said the Kedah Perikatan Nasional chief’s words would impact society’s view on sports and gender roles, instead of just being “light-hearted banter”.
