Mapim juga menggesa kerajaan menyemak semula dasar berkaitan operasi kilang yang mengeluarkan bahan toksik di negara ini.

Presiden Mapim, Mohd Azmi Abd Hamid berkata, Malaysia perlu peraturan ketat ke atas kilang pengeluaran bahan atau sisa yang bersifat toksik.

“Alasan pertumbuhan ekonomi dan peluang pekerjaan tidak harus mengatasi isu keselamatan manusia dan kualiti alam sekitar, katanya dalam kenyataan hari ini. “Kilang yang beroperasi lama sudah tentu wajib menjalani penyelenggaraan rapi kerana ia mengeluarkan gas berbahaya.” Kata Azmi, Malaysia perlu mempunyai peraturan ketat ke atas kilang pengeluaran bahan atau sisa yang bersifat toksik.

Akibatnya, 500,000 orang terdedah kepada gas methyl isocyanate dan bahan kimia lain dari kilang Union Carbide. Jumlah yang mati secara rasmi adalah 2,259 seramai orang.
