PETALING JAYA: National mixed doubles pair Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See failed to stay in the fight for a second international title as they crashed out in the quarter-finals of the Vietnam Open.

The world No. 40 went down 21-11, 17-21, 21-23 to Mak Hee Chun-Chau Hoi Wah of Hong Kong in a 50-minute thriller at the Nguyen Du Cultural Sports Club in Ho Chi Minh City yesterday.

The Malaysians set the tone by comfortably taking the opening game but lost ground in the second as they allowed the experienced Hee Chun-Hoi Wah, who are ranked 63rd in the world, sneak back into the game to take the second. The national pair, who won the Hyderabad Open in India last month, were on the verge of a victory when they held match point at 20-19 in the decider but failed to finish it off.

In the men’s singles, world No. 70 Soong Joo Ven’s decent run came to a halt with a 16-21, 20-22 loss to Taiwan’s world No. 55 Lin Yu-hsien.Men’s doubles: Tinn Isriyanet-Kittinupong Kedren bt Lu Ching-yao-Yang Po-han 9-21, 21-14, 21-16.
