being able to log into the game problem-free, which some players speculate could either be because their country necessitates identification in order to purchase a prepaid phone, or because Blizzard has only banned known prepaid phone plans.,” one Reddit user wrote. “They’ll just use a virtual number service that Blizz don’t know about.”While Blizzard works it out, Richard and countless other low-income prepaid phone users are hurting.
“It feels like a large injustice,” Richard said. “Cheap postpaid plans are around $90. If you are a prepaid phone owner who really wants to play, you are looking at $50 more a month to get a Blizzard-approved phone. Talk about going free-to-play.”players on the requirement, Blizzard has announced it is no longer asking for a phone number for a “majority” of “existing” players, prepaid or not. Here’s Blizzard,Any Overwatch player with a connected Battle.
We remain committed to combating disruptive behavior in Overwatch 2—accounts that were not connected to Battle.net as well as new accounts will still have to meet SMS Protect requirements, which helps to ensure we’re protecting our community against cheating. If a player is caught engaging in disruptive behavior, their account may be banned whether they have a new account or not.
As a team, we will keep listening to ongoing feedback and will make further adjustments in this area if it is required. We have inquired regarding the wording of this pronouncement, as we don’t yet know if, say, absolutely new players who don’t have an existing account will qualify, or who is excluded given that this specifies a majority, and not the entirety of the playerbase.
A useless half-measure. 'Most players' are just their whales who haven't put the game down. Most of us are either new players or players from the first years of the game hoping to return
I use cricket wireless and pay monthly just like any AT&T or Verizon customer. Why doesn't my number qualify?! Absolutely ridiculous that the game requires a number in the first place.
Just remove it. This won't stop trolls or smurfs.
Of course it's punishment for being poor and them seeing you as less valuable 'asset' since they can't ass easily steal your personal data from a pre-paid.
From the wording I'm pretty sure the requirements for SMS verification still exist for new Bnet accounts that are signing up for Overwatch 2 for the first time. Hopefully they keep upholding this, because this whole system was designed to keep new smurfs out.
What the fuck does majority even mean in this context
There are a lot of prepaid 'carriers' out there which block texts to/from those sort of numbers - consumers shoulda been calling that crap out 10 years ago, not accepting it.
There are asian sellers who offer 10-15 numbers for little as $2-5 so if they drop thr restrictions ,do make many accounts and sell them afterwards
idc about the number tbh but i care about my skins that i dont own anymore

This been getting crazy. Kinda makes sense since people use those app's and generator site's.. But's it's also limiting companies, I've heard too many stories where can't use their number.. While I'm over here using a pre-paid number (so must be more region based)
It was supposed to be a joke, Blizzard.
