KOTA KINABALU: The number of residents relocated due to flooding has risen to 1,007, and they are being placed in 13 temporary shelters in five districts in Sabah as of 8am on Monday (June 29).

The districts where villagers were evacuated are in Kota Belud , Papar , Penampang , Beaufort and Tenom . All in all, 80 villages were affected.

The latest statistics were in issued by the State Disaster Management Committee, said Sabah Civil Defence Department director Kol Kamal Mokhtar in a statement. Fifty-two villages from six more districts – Kota Marudu, Keningau, Pitas, Membakut, Putatan and Tuaran – were also affected by the water level rising, but no relocation centres were opened in these areas.

Floods hit the west coast and interior division of Sabah due to continuous downpour that occurred from Saturday evening , where villagers were rescued in stages as water level increased rapidly. The weather improved on Sunday, but related agencies are still monitoring the situation on Monday in case the wet spell returns and condition worsens.
