Many in the badminton fraternity know the score — that it looks beyond Malaysia’s best players to step onto the Olympic podium next year.

Following the euphoria, we were filled with great expectations — that Malaysia was getting closer to winning its first ever Olympic gold medal — in Tokyo. We thought the players would get better and stronger, as that is what progress is all about, and turn their silver into gold four years later. While Lee Zii Jia, who shares the same surname as Chong Wei, has been impressive, beating several big guns, including China’s Olympic champion Chen Long, he has come out short on other occasions.

While BAM remains hopeful that the players will defy the odds and produce an Olympic medal, it is looking beyond Tokyo 2020.
