Noise pollution poses a long-term risk to tree populations and plant diversity that may persist even after the sources of excess noise are removed.
While previous research has documented the short-term impact of noise has on tree populations as it scares off pollinators such as insects and animals, few studies have investigated the long-term effects. Instead, they detected a long-term decline in seedling numbers as the jays refused to revisit the sites.
Jennifer Phillips, co-author of the research published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, said the findings showed how the impact of noise pollution could put pollinating animals off even after the noise is removed.
