NSTnation 'No such thing as 200,000 foreigners granted citizenship'

The ministry in a statement today denied the claim which was made by a Twitter user with the username, TengkuRajaAlamShah.“Claims that more than 200,000 were granted citizenship are false. The ministry would like the Twitter user to come up with proof over his claims.

“Of the amount, only 4,422 were granted citizenship as they fulfilled all the requirements based on provisions under the Federal Constitution. It is the highest form of award by the government and it is not granted randomly,” it said. “Application for the status of a citizen under Article 16 is for persons born in the Federation before Merdeka Day on Aug 31, 1957; and for applications for citizenship registrations under Special Circumstances for those under age 21, under Article 15A.
