PETALING JAYA: The Saudi Arabian government has cancelled umrah pilgrimages for the rest of the year but Hajj has yet to be decided upon, says Datuk Seri Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri.

PETALING JAYA: The Saudi Arabian government has cancelled umrah pilgrimages for the rest of the year but Hajj has yet to be decided upon, says Datuk Seri Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri .

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of religious affairs said that all rumours on cancellations of Hajj should be stopped immediately. "Hajj is one of the main pillars of Islam. However, Covid-19 has caused the Saudi Arabian government to stop the entry of all umrah pilgrims for the rest of the year for fear of the pandemic.

"On April 7, I met with the Saudi Arabian ambassador to Malaysia Mahmoud Hussien Saeed Qattan and his officials, as well as Tabung Haji and Department of Wakaf, Zakat and Hajj officials to get a proper explanation on the issue of Hajj pilgrimage this year. "According to Mahmoud Hussien, there has yet to be an official statement by the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Umrah and Hajj on the matter this year.The annual Hajj season, a major source of income for Saudi Arabia, is expected to begin late July this year and is expected to attract 2.5 million pilgrims from all over the world.
