DJ NewJeansNim has been causing quite a stir from his recent performance at a nightclub in Kuala Lumpur last Friday where he dressed and performed a set as a monk. The entertainer was set to perform at GemuKL on Tuesday , however, the event was cancelled by the nightclub due to the immense backlash the club was receiving for allowing the Korean DJ to perform a day before Wesak Day.
Gemu Club took to Instagram to issue a public apology and to announce that the event will no longer be continuing. Not long after making the announcement, many fans of the controversial figure expressed their anger by responding to the news of the cancellation on social media. As seen in the screenshots below, some fans were even blaming Malaysia for their strict rules and policies claiming that the situation shouldn't be as drastic as it is.
The musician who became one of Asia's top-trending DJs was actually scheduled for another performance here in KL due to high demand. However, according to NST, since the public figure offended the Buddhist community, a complaint was filed to the Malaysian Chinese Association president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong to ban the performer from performing in Malaysia. The Young Buddhist Association Malaysia have also expressed their displeasure towards this public display of indecency.
It is understandable how the DJ's act can heavily affect the Buddhist community by setting a negative image of the religion and the act. What do you think?
