GEORGE TOWN: Local non-environmental organisations (NGOs) will be holding a peaceful protest this weekend to oppose the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project.

Gerakan Pembela Ummah Penang, a coalition of more than 40 NGOs and clubs, is organising a large scale protest at the Permatang Damar Laut football field here from 1pm to 5pm on Sunday .

"There have been multiple memorandums that have been submitted by concerned NGOs to the Prime Minister, and they even held a protest at Parliament but the project has not been shelved. "We hope our protest this weekend will make a difference and the state government will take note of our worries. Mohd Akhir said environmentalists have argued that such a project would adversely impact the livelihood of fishermen and the marine ecosystem in the southern part of the island."After the protest, we will again submit a memorandum to the state government objecting the PSR," he said.
