The country was placed into a complete lockdown last Thursday, and a national emergency was declared, to beat the local transmission of Covid-19. The number of new Covid-19 cases was as high as 85 last week, but has stayed lower this week. More than half of the cases was related to overseas travel and community transmission cases were about 1 per cent.

New Zealand, with about 5 million people, has fewer infections than many other countries, like neighbouring Australia, where the number of cases now exceeds 4,500 with 20 deaths.
