NEW Zealand hari ini secara rasmi mengharamkan penggunaan beg plastik dengan memperkenalkan denda berat terhadap perniagaan yang terus mengeluarkannya. Pencemaran plastik telah menyebabkan berjuta burung dan lebih 100,000 mamalia laut cedera atau mati setiap tahun akibat tertelan atau dibelit plastik.“Rakyat New Zealand bangga dengan reputasi negara yang bersih dan hijau, dan mahu ia diteruskan,” kata Menteri Alam Sekitar, Eugenie Sage.Di bawah peraturan baharu ini, pengeluaran beg plastik tidak lagi dibenarkan, tetapi beg guna semula boleh terus digunakan.

Kebanyakan pasar raya besar diNew Zeland bagaimanapun secara sukarela telah mengharamkan penggunaan beg plastik sejak undang-undang tersebut diumumkan pada Ogos tahun lalu. Menurut Program Alam Sekitar PBB , lebih daripada 80 negara telah mengambil langkah serupa seperti New Zealand. – AFP, 1 Julai, 2019.
