Another 121,749 people, not seasonally adjusted, filed under a special program for freelance and gig workers who are not eligible for regular benefits, about 12,000 less than the week before, according to the weekly data. After soaring into the millions in the early weeks of the Covid-19 pandemic and remaining in the high hundreds of thousands for the rest of 2020, the past three weeks have a brought marked declines in new applications, indicating vaccination campaigns and government stimulus are allowing business to return to normal and rehire workers.

“Claims, which are down 189,000 since the start of April, are on a clear downward path. However, a broad and inclusive recovery in the labour market will be a gradual process,” she said.
