If you follow Netflix, you would have heard about its intention of cracking down on password sharing since last year. While there isn't any official statement on how the company plans to do so, here's what we know about it so far.
In case you're out of the loop, reports have said that the password-sharing termination would come by the end of the first quarter of 2023. As a mission set by Greg Peters, Co-CEO of Netflix, the company has yet to figure out how exactly they would do it. Initially, there was a support page but it is removed already.
According to sources, Netflix users would have to access their accounts every month. Devices that are using the account outside of their home would then be blocked, and the system will ask the other users to create an account. Of course, this is very counter-productive because the main owner would have more than one device watching Netflix so obviously, it didn't make sense for Netflix users online.
In response to the now-removed-support page on password sharing, a Netflix spokesperson told the media that the support page was only applicable to Chile, Costa Rica and Peru. That said, the password-sharing pilot tests in those countries didn't sound successful as Netflix left the customers more confused.
Anyway, we sincerely hope that Netflix can find the best solution if the company is keen on curbing password-sharing. Otherwise, with the many TV streaming platforms out there in the market, it's easy to cancel Netflix and switch to another one.
