TOKYO, Sept 23 — Struggling former world number one Garbine Muguruza said she was “not scared” of her deepening slump after losing in the quarter-finals of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo today.
But she said she had “already recovered” from her latest defeat and was looking forward to her next tournament. Muguruza, who won the French Open in 2016 and Wimbledon a year later, started the year ranked number three but has since lost in the first round of six tournaments. “Because I’ve been through many ups and downs, I have a tough wall where this is not going to bother me.”Top seed Paula Badosa, US Open semi-finalist Caroline Garcia and Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina all made early exits, while Naomi Osaka withdrew in the second round with abdominal pain.
