Turkish and Russian officials say they want to protect civilians inside and outside the de-escalation zone .

Tensions have soared since 33 Turkish soldiers died Thursday in an air strike in Syria, where Russia backs President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and Turkey backs Islamists groups in Idlib province. Russia calls them terrorists. Officials from both Turkey and Russia also said they want to “protect civilians inside and outside the de-escalation zone and provide emergency humanitarian aid to all those in need”, the ministry said.
