KUALA LUMPUR: A homeowner managed to track down and apprehend a suspect who broke into his house here.

Ng said SS15 and SS14 served as good testing grounds to assess whether the new methods would work more effectively than the current system. Ng said night-shift cleaning was done in addition to KDEBWM’s contracted job, which means that a different team of workers stepped in at night.“If it is effective, I will recommend for MBSJ to change the cleaning services to night when the next contract with KDEBWM is up for renewal,” she said.

“The street vacuum was used for a day in SS14. Workers said it made cleaning faster and more efficient, as they completed cleaning one street in half the usual time,” said Ng.“But operational and logistical challenges have to be sorted out first, such as how to transport the machine and to collect accumulated rubbish,” she added.

The final initiative is an idea Ng borrowed from Muar, which has been ranked among Asean’s cleanest tourist destinations several times. “While ground floor shops are required to have bins placed in back lanes, many upper floor units don’t have such a requirement, resulting in rubbish being haphazardly thrown along walkways or on street corners,” she said.

“The challenge now is for MBSJ to reach out to SS15 building owners to inform them about the initiative and to educate foreign workers staying in upper units on what needs to be done. If successfully implemented at Jalan SS15/4, Ng said the plan could be introduced in the entire SS15 commercial area.As the implementation partner, KDEBWM welcomed the pilot initiatives and will provide support where necessary, although it cautioned that many details needed to be ironed out.

The machine, he said was so big that a three-tonne truck – the size of a bulk waste lorry – was required to transport it. Ng is working with KDEBWM to improve waste management and cleaning services in the SS15 commercial area.
