PETALING JAYA: There’s just no stopping Kento Momota as the Japanese world No. 1 performed another remarkable turnaround in his career.

The 27-year-old banned from the Rio Olympics for gambling in 2016 and was almost forced to retire last year following a road accident – brushed aside the setbacks with a smashing return.

In Bali yesterday, Momota outclassed Denmark’s world No. 3 Anders Antonsen 21-17, 21-11 to be crowned the Indonesian Masters champion for his first triumph in nearly two years. Momota’s resurgence could not come at a better time as the World Championships is set to take place in Huelva, Spain from Dec 12-19.Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi continued to show that they have what it takes to play the leading role following the retirement of several seniors including Hiroyuki Endo, Keigo Sonoda and Takeshi Kamura by winning their second title in as many months.

They stunned Indonesia’s world No. 1 Kevin Sanjaya-Marcus Fernaldi 21-11, 17-21, 21-19 to lift the Indonesian Masters men’s doubles title. The same can be said for Nami Matsuyama-Chiharu Shida who are beginning to shine in the absence of their more illustrious compatriots – world No. 1 Yuki Fukushima-Sayaka Hirota and No. 3 Mayu Matsumoto-Wakana Nagahara. The only blemish for Japan was Akane Yamaguchi’s 17-21, 19-21 defeat to South Korea’s An Se-young in the women’s singles final.
