A patrol team was conducting a routine operation in the area when they saw a fibreglass boat with no registration number.

MMEA Mersing Zone Maritime Cmdr Suhaizan Saadin said the men were detained at 6.30pm on Monday , 0.23 nautical miles north-west of Pulau Tengah.

"An MMEA patrol team was conducting a routine operation in the area when they saw a fibreglass boat... no registration number. "Checks found that it was crewed by two Vietnamese men aged 35 and 36," he said in a statement on Tuesday . He added that both men did not have valid documents and an inspection of the boat found diving equipment."The duo, along with their boat, were then brought to the Teluk Gading Maritime Jetty for further action," Suhaizan said.

The case is being investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985 for possessing unlicensed fishing equipment, the Immigration Act 1959/63 for entering the country without valid travel documents, and the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 for operating a boat without a licence.
