KOTA TINGGI: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has detained two tankers that did not have proper documentation in east Johor waters here.

MMEA Tanjung Sedili maritime zone director Maritime Capt Mohd Zulfadli Nayan said patrol boats on duty Friday morning spotted the two vessels side by side some 8.9 nautical miles off Tanjung Penawar, Kota Tinggi.

Upon inspection, the ships, registered in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea , were operated by an all-Indonesian crew."They failed to produce the ships' insurance policies and were also found to have committed an offence for anchoring without permission," he said. Mohd Zulfadli said the case was being investigated under Section 361, Section 338 and Section 491B of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 for the offences."I advise ship operators and vessel owners to apply for the necessary permits and documents from the Marine Department before carrying any activities on water," he added.
